Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there. In excellent condition. No dents, dings, scratches, etc. No fret wear. I know of one steel guitarist who put a raised nut on a Variax to convert it into a lap steel. You could try the piezos on a lap steel to see if the sound that you want is there. If there is a solution to this problem, I believe it has to be electronically or digitally filtering out the noise from the signal after the Peizos amplify it. I really wanted them to work on a PSG, and was very disappointed that I was unable to prevent them from picking up the mechanical noise, no matter what I did. The Peizo picked up the changer nose through the wood.Īs I mentioned earlier, I did a lot of experimenting with Peizos. There is a misconception here that the Peizos only pick up the mechanical noise through the bridge, Not so, I placed one on the neck under the first fret, as far from the changer as possible, and it did not solve the problem. The amount of string motion/stretch on the bridge end for activated changes is much lower (1/30 in this case) than at the changer end.hence less noise. If you look at the design of the BEAST in another thread, you will see that it is an easy mount for piezos. ![]() How much of the mechanical noise comes through on the pedabro? But maybe you would still get transferal of some mechanical noise through the strings themselves. It would seem to be possible to isolate the resonator or soundboard from the mechanical parts. Then you could mike it or attach a piezo transducer the same as with an acoustic instrument. The bridge/saddle would be separate from the changer and would attach to the resonator or soundboard. You could use a resonator, or design a thin spruce soundboard like an acoustic guitar. But if you are after an acoustic type sound, you might be surprised how easy it is to get it this way.Īnother approach would be to build an acoustic pedal steel something like the pedabro. I prefer steel with the electric guitar tone of a guitar amp and speaker. It can be a little harsh in the highs and weak in the lows, but a good multi-band equalizer could probably fix that. I've always been struck by how acoustic a steel sounds going directly into a recording board or PA, instead of using a guitar amp and speaker, especially if you play with bare fingers. ![]() Hopefully when I contact line 6 next week /i'll get some support (if nothing else) regarding piezo elements and how to get 8 (or 16.) of them hooked up to the Variax system.ġ930's/40's Rickenbacher/Rickenbacker 6&8 string lap steelsġ921 Weissenborn Style 2 Hilo&Schireson hollownecksġ959 Fender 400 9+2 B6 1960's Fender 800 3+3+2 1948 Fender Dual-8 Professional I've tried the same thing on a few rodded guitars, and there is inherently more mechanical noise no matter what you do. I've done some experimental testing with single piezo elements and various placement, and with a roller or older bar-type bridge, if the guitar is set up well there's almost no noise. The able guitars, when adjusted very carefully and lubed properly, make almost no mechanical noise that carries to the changer - and then the changer is isolated from the bridge by a length of string which could easily be damped. The other 2 reasons the Fender would work - bridge/mechanics isolation and inherently low-noise levels. The trick is in finding the right parts AND a "donor" Variax for the guts. It would be fairly simple to convert the 400 or 1000 to almost any type of bridge saddle/piezo sensor. However, it IS workable on some of our trusty ol' Fenders - the long-scale models only (short scale ones have an integrated bridge/finger.) ![]() The problem with most steels is - where do you put the piezo to pick up physical vibrations (not magnetic ones) from the string? It would have to be the bridge - except on modern steels there IS no bridge.there's a roller or a finger/bridge combination.Īnd noise is going to kill you, even if you could figure out way to mount piezos on that sort of mechanical setup. Mike Perlowin and I have ben discussing this pretty extensively with the idea of using it for installation of Line 6 Variax technology into a pedal steel. ![]()
